This Week I Have Been Mostly Playing…
Wilmot's Warehouse on Nintendo Switch
Look, you all know me, I am not the tidiest person ever. Ok fuck it, I am very messy. I love a bit of chaos, it helps me work and write. Even after many years of berating I have not changed much, as my desk at work can attest…. So it was with complete surprise that I found a game that has changed my thinking! Wilmot’s Warehouse is a therapeutic tidying up game.
You play as Wilmot, a charming square faced chap in a warehouse. (Solid title right?) Items, that are also square blocks, are delivered and you have 2 minutes to arrange them in the warehouse as you see fit. These can be as weird as traffic cones, snowmen and a nuclear explosion! After the time runs out; four people appear at the top of the warehouse demanding a certain number of items each. You need to grab them and deliver them to earn Stars that can buy upgrades later.
All this sounds very simple but it’s the complexity that arrives later that throws you. After completing the first round of orders another delivery will arrive with NEW items. Again you have two minutes to arrange them but the question is, where? You put all the winter things to the left and hats to the right but where the fuck do you put the winter hat?! In those heated moments all you can do is chuck it somewhere you will remember.
Again there is a new list of items required and you must rush around the warehouse grabbing the right amount. There is a limit to how many you can hold and as the number of items grows it can be hard getting around. I am still being screwed over by the dog snouts that sit in front of the counter that I cannot put anywhere. They don't make sense!
The new found joy I have from this game is the Stock Take time. This is unlimited in length and allows you to rearrange the items to your heart’s content. It is so calming and I now get it! For context I am on the Overground train for 30 minutes and I spent 26 of those in stock take…
It might not sound much of a ‘game’ but it really is. It’s tough to earn stars and they are a must to unlock things like being able to carry more items, be able to rotate them and remove the giant columns from the warehouse. Each unlocks a new way of thinking which is amazing to work out.
This is a game that keeps things simple but sinks its teeth into you. It can be thought of as a thinking person’s candy crush. Whereas that is spotting patterns and being destructive this more about spacial awareness and grouping items in a way that works for you. I am already regretting the clusterfuck of an area in my warehouse that I designated to man made objects….
