This Week I Have Been Mostly Playing…
Superhot on Nintendo Switch
Well wouldn't you know it? Nintendo drop not one, but two of my favourite games onto the Switch on the same day! Spoilt for choice and with the way the British weather has been over the bank holiday weekend of course I have been playing Hotline Miami….
Jokes. Superhot it is!
This actually came out originally three years ago and I rinsed it then. This is my second time back and to be fair it still stands up. It's a First Person Shooter (FPS) where time moves when you move. Well kind of, if you are stationary time still moves albeit very slowly.
You are presented with a series of minimalistic levels and must take out the ‘red’ men who appear from doors all around trying to kill you with guns, swords and their bare fists. Each level is pretty short but with time slow it gives you the chance to dodge bullets almost Matrix style and take them out, one by one.
Killing all enemies is necessary to finish each level. And this is where the fun starts. Usually you are armed with some type of gun but even your fists will be enough to take them out. A shot on any body part will cause them to shatter into a thousand pieces. Which at times does look beautiful. But more often than not there isn't time to dwell on each perfect shot. There's nothing quite like firing a bullet 3ft ahead of a dude and to find him running into it.
To drop with Hotline Miami is apt. They both have this stuntman in a movie feel to them. Punch guy, grab gun, shoot him, throw at the next guy as you then grab a katana and take out another two before grabbing a shotgun. In Superhot its almost balletic, you plan this long flowing movements, from weapon to weapon, enemy to enemy. Though stressful it feels graceful.
Whereas Hotline Miami is like a mass brawl, a mad man smashing his way around a house, Superhot is more precise, like a hitman with a target. You can’t pause for breath in those heated micro seconds in Hotline Miami but here you can really savour your movements. The normal speed replays at the end are a brilliant touch, making you look even more like a hero.
The story is a little odd, pressing on the fourth wall if not quite pushing through but I would be hard pressed to fully explain it. It’s enough to keep drawing you in to see where it all goes and thankfully the further you go the longer and more complex levels become.
It wasn't a cheap drop for the length of game. You can get this title on other consoles for a much better price. Hell even something like Hollow Knight or Celeste gives you incredible games for a third less. But there is something about the nature of this game, being almost able to control time and take down 8 people in a few moves is something else. And on the go! You can’t ask for much more!
