Baba Is You

This Week I Have Been Mostly Playing…

Baba Is You on Nintendo Switch

A lot of the games I play are huge and absorb countless hours from my life. With big open worlds and lots of different mechanics to learn leaves me with an issue on how to write a concise review. Fortunately this is not the case with Baba Is You, a surprise indie gem from Finnish developer's Hempuli. It’s a pure puzzle game and probably one of the finest I have ever played. This is deliberately a short review as I don’t want to give away any of the puzzles.

The puzzles are built around the title Baba Is You. Each word is a block that can be moved around to change how things work in each level.. It has to be a complete short sentence but they grow in complexity as the game goes on. You can die, which the alerts you to do the rewind button which can take you all the way back to where you started, which is a great feature. You often make one wrong move and starting again would be a ball ache.

The graphics are your typical retro fair but the music is a pure joy. It can be a little erie at times but totally matches the aesthetics. The world map contains several areas with multiple levels and bonus ones to dig your teeth into.

Each level can be brutal. I have spend thirty minutes on one and still have not figured it out. The answer is staring me in the face for sure but I will get there in the end. Don’t be put off but the difficulty, it’s hard because it forces you to think in more abstract ways. Some are solved in seconds. Genius is thrown around a lot but it applies to the game and how it makes you feel. A rare trait in any game.

I would probably be over selling it to say that it has won many awards and Arvi Teikar who has made this game totally deserves them. And on top of that 10% of the income goes to charity!

Sure puzzle games are typically a one time play but that makes it all the more special.

Just remember. BABA IS YOU
